Spent 2 days following the P&O Tour of the North cycle race, Sunday i was in Cookstown, and Moneymore. I am really getting a feel for the settings i like on the D4 and i’m still amazed at how a few changes inside the camera can almost stop any editing for me when i go to send the pictures.

Saturday night the kids and i went to watch the Titanic Light and Firework show in Belfast, we managed to get a spot on the other side of the lough, NO CROWDS !!

Kyle used one of the cameras with 24-70, i was further down the dock and shot on a 70-200, and as you can see, the D4 even at high iso still has retained all the blacks and colors. This was the first real test at high iso’s 6400 – 8000 and the cameras really delivered, the only negative thing is the screen does NOT represent what you see on the laptop screen, this is a problem for all the chimpers, who use the screen to check their photos, the screen is very yellow.

If you just got a new Nikon flash or a new Nikon camera like the D4 or D800, maybe even a Nikon 1, there’s an app for you. If you are like me, you don’t want to carry a big manual with you everywhere you go, it is good to know that you can download the manual in pdf form from the Nikon website. To make it simple, Nikon has a free iPhone/iPad app  called Nikon Manual Viewer – it is free and easier than carrying around a manual. Several of Nikon’s product manuals for DSLRs, NIkon 1 and speedlights are available for download and viewing from within the app itself (currently only in English or Japanese).

Family Portraits in HDR  a wonderful, detailed and tone rich photograph awaits the viewer here in this post by farbspiel photography.  They also share a few and informative technical details into how the image was created, creating a post that is both informative and captivating.

IPHONE Tuesday  a camera is a tool, not a destination.  This great post from Steven Perlmutter shares a pair of shots captured with his iPhone that are really quite wonderful.  Each has its own artistic flair and feel, producing a post that is really something to view and take in.

Grand Central Terminal Mark Garbowski takes us on a brief journey to explore the underground tunnel of this iconic place.  Great drama is found in the black-and-white photograph, and the vanishing point created as the walkway trails off into the far distance is really mesmerizing.

Anton Kawasaki’s Iphoneography Have a look at Antons Flickrr account, his pics are superb, all with iphone only.

Former WBC Bantamweight champion, Wayne McCullough was back in Belfast fir 48 hours this week, and i was lucky enough to get to spend some of the time with him while he was here. I couldn’t put anything up on the blog as it was a surprise visit to help announce the fact that the Cuban olympic boxing squad are going to train in Belfast before the Olympics.

I got the flight times wrong for Waynes arrival in Belfast and was gutted as i thought i had missed the chance of getting the pic of him back in Belfast. Only thing that saved me was Waynes sister in Law, Nicola Bothwell, Nicola runs

NB Chartered Marketing in Belfast, so after speaking with Nicola, her and Wayne agreed to meet me and the journalist at the new Titanic Building, (remember this guy had just got off a flight from Las Vegas ).

You realise how big a boxing name is when even Kyle wants a photo with him ! But, there’s no show without punch. ( see what i did there ?)

We left poor exhausted Wayne and let him get some sleep, then i got a call from Boxer Carl Frampton, and he was keen to meet up with Wayne, remember, Wayne is his idol, one of the reasons he got into boxing.

Carl was buzzing, not to just meet Wayne, but Wayne and him were exchanging ideas about different fights he has won, fights he would like to take, ways to approach fights in the latter rounds, it was great just to get to listen to this as a a boxing fan myself.

Just when you think this day couldn’t get any better, along comes Martin Rogan and we literally took over the whole corner of the coffee shop !

so i apologise to any poor person in Arizona Coffee shop on the Lisburn Road yesterday for the noise, and the amount of seats we took up !

But thank you to Wayne McCullough, always a gentleman, Martin Rogan and Carl Frampton, these guys NEVER complain when i go on about taking photos.

This is my Lexar Card Reader usb 3.0 i’ve been using for quite a while now, and i’ve always found it good and reliable, until i started using it for my Nikon D4 images on my laptop. Either Photomechanic didn’t see the images or else it would open empty grey boxes, i tried Fotostation, Lightroom 3, Lightroom 4 and even Capture One, all had the same results. I was blaming Nikon, i was wrong, out of sheer desperation i plugged in a £5 Multi Card Reader.

Both of these readers are USB leads, so i have no idea why the £60 lexar card reader is having trouble, yet the £5 card reader is flying !

A while ago i used my D3 to wirelessly send pics Live at a Linfield Glentoran game at Windsor Park, in Belfast, it was a lot of fun, then for some reason i didn’t bother keeping up with this, it’s a no brainer as the ipad 2 battery life is amazing, and my son and i found the screen a great representation of what colours etc were relevant to that image.

One of the off putting things was if you go to EYEFI website the Nikon D3 is the ONLY camera they tell you will NOT work with their cards, although i got it working we noticed not every image we selected in camera was always transferred over to the ipad 2.

Well, i had a simple job to do for the Milk Cup the other day, and i thought no better time to start this all up again.

Time to call in the 15 Year old son, ( you know your getting old when your son fixes everything electrical) he found an SD to CompactFlash adaptor, then smashed half of the side off of it !

We found out that the compactflash adaptor have a metal piece on either side, and that is what sometimes interferes with the signal transmitting pictures.

Here is the other side of the adaptor where the EYEFI card slips in.

We kept the metal on one side, to try and keep some strength to the adaptor which is otherwise made of plastic.

So, the adaptor was £10, 2 cups of coffee and we ( ok, i mean Kyle) fixed it and where i took the group picture was under Shamrock Parks metal grandstand, and i made sure i was sending multiple e mails at the same time.

The image on the camera transferred in about 7-10 seconds, the graet thing about the eyefi card is you can set it to only send what you Tag in the camera. Imagine if you were shooting sports, it wouldn’t be able to cope with the huge bursts of shots, all trying to transfer at the same time. All you do is shoot, look and tag a few that you need to go across, and it’s there. I was able to do the pictures, and as i was setting up the next shot, the last photos were there waiting for me, i then showed them to the Milk Cup Chairman and Secretary, they picked what they liked and i e-mailed them to them on the spot, my job was done before i even put the camera gear back in the bag.

I hope this helps, i got a few shitty e mails from people the last time saying i didn’t explain how i got my pics into the ipad ipad2, it wasn’t a secret, just at the time i wrote that piece, i was still working out the bugs myself.

Ok, i hope this helps people, next thing i’m going to finalise this weekend is some kind of Ipad 2 Workflow, at sport to see if i can really replace my laptop at football, G.A.A or even Boxing Matches

This may seem like a strange name for a Blog Post but over on Sportshooter.com they have a post on their message board called “D4 First Impressions Not Good”.

I don’t know what camera they’ve been using but some of these photographers have actually given their D4 back to the dealer and gotten their money back !!

What’s their problem ?

Don’t like the new positioning of the button, they say focusing isn’t great, colours aren’t great, don’t like the newly designed battery etc, etc.

I LOVE THIS CAMERA !

i can’t make it any clearer than that. Did it work great from the box ?, NO

Did i have to change some settings to get the look that i like ?, Yes

Can i shoot tethered ? NO

Is the colour on your screen the same as what apears on your laptop screen ? NO

Has Nikon just added £500 onto the price of a D4 ? YES

But, you can’t be one of the first people anywhere to get one of these cameras and expect everything to run smooth, i’ll hold on to my D4 and wait for the software to catch up. Nikon Camera Control Pro 2 updated their software today, this means tethered shooting should no be available.

Nikon will do a firmware update soon, as you can see from one of todays pictures i took, the D4 works really well with SB800′s, not the latest Nikon Flashguns, but my 6 year old flashes.

Just to prove that not every job is glamorous, No offence to Dominic Kirwan but i had to go and shoot a job in Lisburn Civic Centre, and it’s similar to shooting in a school gym. There were only a few coloured lights shining on Dominic, so i tried out the D4′s high ISO, although i’m still nowhere near it’s highest setting.

These photos are straight off the Card in the camera (compact Flash, NOT QXD) tonight. The only thing done to these images, are they were made smaller for upload to this site.

At last, after having ups and downs, and trying to get the settings the way i wanted them, tonight everything fell into place. This was thanks to a lot of research, a lot of wrong settings and a long phone call with Britains top sports photographer, Dickie Pelham. Dickie is very giving with his knowledge and his 25 years of getting “The Shot”.

So, Thanks Dickie, tonight i saw a big difference in everything from Focusing to White Balance, to skin tones.

Tonights game was a Setanta Cup game at The Oval, in Belfast between Glentoran and Sligo Rovers. All pictures were shot on 500MM F4 Nikon D4 at 4000 iso, Yes, 4000 ISO.

I’ve had a lot of e mails and DM’s on Twitter, and a lot of them were quite nasty. Telling me that the D4 was overpriced, rip off, too dear, disgrace etc etc.

Well, after tonight, i can promise you, this camera is unbelievable !, i Didn’t use the QXD card tonight, i shot the game on Compact Flash, and i found it really quick.

Dickie Pelham was talking a lot about the D4 focusing speed, and the large amount of different options and combinations you can use.

Like its predecessor, the D4′s sensor module utilizes 51 strategically placed AF points that are designed to capture the subject in a variety of ways: by working together like a net to capture moving subjects or for pinpoint accuracy, by using a single AF point to home in on the exact place on the chosen subject. All 51 AF points of the D4 are usable with every AF NIKKOR lens of f/5.6 or faster. The D4 delivers high performance even in extremely low-lit situations. AF detection is fast and accurate down to an impressive -2 EV (ISO 100, 20°C/68°F), which is approximately the physical limit of human visibility through an optical viewfinder. Consistent, reliable performance can be expected at night stadium assignments, in poorly lit indoor arenas, theaters and any other low-lit venue. You can also choose to shoot with Nikon’s classic 11 focus points for quicker focus-point selection.

15 cross-type sensors in the central area and 11 focus points compatible with f/8

The D4 aligns its 15 cross-type sensors in the central viewfinder area to detect contrast in both vertical and horizontal lines for better AF performance. Each cross-type sensor is responsive with f/5.6 and provides its full performance with all AF-NIKKOR lenses. Moreover, the five central focus points and three points to the left and right of them in the middle line are compatible with f/8. Stress-free focusing is realized with the 1.4x or 1.7x teleconverter and precise focusing is possible even with the effective aperture value of f/8 by combining a 2.0x teleconverter with super-telephoto NIKKOR lenses, that are frequently used for sports shooting. This delivers a new level of potential when shooting distant subjects, such as sports or wildlife.

If you have ordered this camera, are thinking about buying this camera, or are not sure about spending the money on it, all i can say is it does NOT disappoint !

It feels quicker, smoother and faster than anything i’ve ever used before. And tonight to be able to shoot at 4000 ISO and be able to crop and Sharpen those images just shows how far this camera has came since the D3.
